GROOMING, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Grooming is important, some dogs more important than others, depending on the breed. For example, maltese poodles need more regular grooming than Jack Russels (long hair vs short hair). But it does not mean the Jack Russel does not need grooming.

From a young age, it is important to get your pup used to having his/her ears checked and clean, cleaning of eyes, nail clipping, brushing, etc. This makes your life as well as your pup’s life easier to get used to grooming from a young age. By positively reinforce grooming, both of you will enjoy grooming, especially if your dog needs to be with a professional groomer. Often I hear some dogs have to go under sedation in order to be groomed, as some dogs become aggressive towards the groomer. This is very stressful to the dog as well as the groomer.

Grooming is important to avoid matted hair, and long nails. If you not comfortable clipping your own dog’s nails, its better to get a professional in. If you bath your dog at home, ensure that you use shampoos made for dogs, as often some people use human shampoo for their dogs, and this is often too harsh for the dog’s skin. Rather make sure you use shampoo for dogs only.

Brush your dog’s hair on a regular basis. Dogs often love to be brushed and find it a great bonding time with their owners.

If you are concerned about ticks and fleas, use something like Angel’s Choice (https://www.angelschoice.co.za/). I’ve heard many negative stories about the chewing tablets for ticks and fleas, it causes neurological problems for many dogs.
